Gutter Materials
Material quality has a direct impact on how long a gutter system will perform. Considering Florida’s heat, humidity, and heavy rainfalls, materials are something we need to take very seriously. Choosing the right material helps protect your home and landscaping from water damage.
At Gecko Gutter, we use aluminum sourced from established manufacturers. Our choices are selected specifically for durability in this climate. We like aluminum because it is lightweight, resistant to rust, and well-suited for handling the weather in Florida.
By starting with reliable materials, we’re able to install gutter systems designed to perform and that require minimal upkeep for our customers.
Why We Use Aluminum for Your Gutter System
- Lightweight yet structurally strong
- Naturally resistant to rust
- Well-suited for humid, high-heat environments
Unlike steel, aluminum does not rust, making it especially appropriate for Florida’s moisture levels and coastal air exposure. Gecko Gutter also does not install plastic or PVC systems, which can degrade under prolonged UV exposure.
Aluminum Thickness
Aluminum thickness affects strength and long-term performance. This is particularly important in our state due to our heavy downpours. Also firm material better resists denting, holds its shape, and maintains proper pitch under Florida’s heavy rainfall.
Gutter aluminum is measured in thousandths of an inch. We use 0.027” aluminum, which is sturdy and appropriate for residential performance in Florida conditions. 0.032” is available, but unnecessary for most residential applications. We are happy to offer quotes for 0.032” upon request. On a typical home, upgrading adds an average of $90 to the material cost.
Expansion and Contraction
All metals expand and contract with temperature changes. In Florida’s intense sun and daily heat cycles, this movement is something we keep in mind during installation.
Proper hanger spacing and fastening allow for thermal movement and helps prevent warping, separation, or seam stress over time.
Corrosion Considerations in Florida
- High humidity
- Airborne salt — even in inland areas
- Organic debris buildup
- Standing water from improper drainage
